System Requirements

The MSDR (Multi Site Disaster Recovery) solution is designed to integrate into Proxmox VE infrastructures, ensuring compatibility, performance, and data consistency even in distributed contexts.

To achieve optimal results in terms of RPO/RTO, replication performance, and stability, it is necessary to comply with a series of technical prerequisites regarding hardware, network, and software configuration.

Minimum hardware requirements:

Cluster

  • Minimum 2 hyperconverged clusters.
  • Minimum 3 nodes per cluster.

Proxmox VE Nodes

  • Intel/AMD multi-core CPU with VT-x/AMD-V support (at least 8 cores / 16 threads per node).
  • RAM: minimum 64 GB per node; 128 GB or higher recommended.
  • Local storage: enterprise-grade SSD or NVMe.
  • IPMI, iDRAC, or equivalent management card for remote management.

DR Cluster

  • Hyperconverged Proxmox VE cluster, minimum 3 nodes.
  • The DR cluster sizing must be proportional to the number and profile of VMs that may be activated in the event of a disaster or simulation test.
  • Hardware architecture compatibility—CPU, NIC chipset, and BIOS—with production nodes is required to ensure transparent VM migration and startup without reconfiguration.

The DR site does not need to be a 1:1 mirror of the production cluster’s hardware specifications.

Network and Connectivity Requirements

Network Topology

  • Sites must be mutually reachable via Layer 2/3 connections or site-to-site VPNs between clusters (public IPs or dedicated MPLS networks).
  • Bandwidth should be appropriately sized based on the workload.

Recommended minimum bandwidth

  • 100 – 300 Mbps for baseline Disaster Recovery scenarios
  • 500 – 1000 Mbps or more for multi-site setups or high I/O environments.
  • For WAN or long-distance connections, use dedicated links or guaranteed QoS.

Security Requirements

  • TLS encryption enabled on replication channels.
  • Key-based or certificate-based authentication for cross-cluster access.

Software and Compatibility Requirements

Proxmox VE

  • Recommended version: latest Proxmox VE release (Enterprise Repository)
